The Book Review: Grandpa’s Bag Of Stories

Ajja and Ajji plan to visit Mayawati- a hill station in Uttarakhand, to visit Ajji’s brother Shyam. Coincidentally their grandchildren got school holidays around the same time. Hence Ajja and Ajji decided to take Raghu, Meenu, Krishna and Anoushka with them to Mayawati. As their journey begins, Ajja started narrating stories to the kids to keep them engaged. All these stories are age-appropriate and value-based teaching subtle messages, that need to be ingrained into young minds.

There are nineteen stories ranging from imaginary fairy tales set in the past to those set in recent times. About the King who wanted to help the gardener with watermelons, how bitter gourds got their bitter taste, why the moon looked like it had a rabbit embedded in it or maybe a deer inside it, the miser who ultimately wished he donated than be penalized for his greed for money, the ambitious son who tried spending away his money to inherit his father’s fortune.

Each of these stories is gem in its kind and is accompanied by interesting illustrations that portray the story so well.

Grandpa’s Bag of Stories | An illustrated collection of timeless tales from India’s favourite storyteller Sudha Murthy.

Overall thoughts on the book:

It is always a pleasure to read Sudha Murthy’s books. My son and I are fond of her storytelling and simple writing style. She beautifully weaves value-based stories without preaching but through storytelling to show the next generation the advantages of a good value system. It’s everything I as a parent try to teach my child.

The story is set in Mayawati, a place in Uttrakhand which is a real place. So, while you enjoy reading the stories and adventure, you get to know the geographical details of a real place alongside.

  • The stories are so exhilarating that will stay with the reader for a long time.
  • The lucid language and the striking illustrations make the story come alive.
  • The book is the perfect combination of humour, adventure and entertainment and is thus a must-read for any age
